Excellent novel. It’s hard to believe that this was Ms. Alexander’s debut work. Whenever I try out a new author, I tend to start with their later work, assuming that it usually takes a couple books to get into the groove. I have no reservations about recommending this one to my readers.

Main characters are very likeable, which isn’t that easy to do when the heroine is essentially a criminal. It’s not easy to get people past the idea of a smuggler, and a female one at that. (I know because one of my characters was in the same profession.)

Julian is a greater tortured hero. His story (a spy getting old – for a spy - and somewhat jaded) has certainly been done before, but Alexander manages to avoid making him too cliché. The secondary characters are also interesting and help round out the story.

The Smuggler Wore Silk is a spy thriller, so it feeds the hunger of those of us who like a little adventure in our romances. It is also thoroughly a romance and easily enjoyed by those who care for little else.

The Smuggler Wore Silk A Spy in the Ton Novel Alyssa Alexander 9780425269527 Books Reviews

A stunning debut from a talented new author. Alyssa Alexander's exciting historical is filled with fast-paced action and deeply emotional love scenes sure to keep readers turning pages and eager for more. Fascinating characters breathe life into every page. This author is one to watch. A winner!
This is a very well written historical suspense with deeply developed characters and plot. A great deal of action set a wonderful pace. Loved it.
It wasn't until after I finished the book when I realized it was Ms. Alexander's first novel. Very impressive! Loved the characters Grace and Julian, they kept the story very interesting. What I really liked about it was the details were very descriptive but not mind numbingly so, it also seemed faster paced than other English romances. I highly recommend it.
But I was so disappointed by this book that I quit reading at page 144. I thought the first few pages were very strong and I had hopes of an enjoyable read, but as I read on, I found the characters flat, and the dialog became irritating to me. I quickly became turned off by the hero and heroine repeatedly saying "fair lady" and "m'lord smuggler." I didn't feel there was any true tension between the hero and heroine. As for plot, I guessed who the villain was as soon as he appeared in the first few pages of the book. (I scanned the last few pages of the book to confirm who it was.)

Two books I can't help comparing "The Smuggler Wore Silk" to are "The Spymaster's Lady" by Joanna Bourne, and "Smuggler's Lady" by Jane Feather, both of which I would highly recommend.
Not awful. Not wonderful. The characters had sparks of interest to their personalities but nothing that hasn't been done to death (and better). Some situations were terribly unrealistic, and I am usually pretty forgiving from a suspension-of-disbelief perspective. I almost stopped reading when the heroine sutured up her own upper arm. (Suturing is most definitely a two-handed activity.). But it occurred near the end and I liked it enough to soldier on. I won't be reading he rest of the series, though, unless I'm really bored or see reviews indicating a great improvement.
The best compliment I can give this book is that I couldn't put it down. So many things I needed to do today, but making sure Julian and Grace made it through to the other side somehow landed on top.

Julian's a charmer, but under his Wandering Earl facade he's a calculating spy. Grace isn't what she seems, either--the easily ignored poor relation is actually a smuggler and a healer. Who better for a spy than a smuggler?

I'm a sucker for a breeches wearing heroine and a tortured hero. Alexander gives me both. My other weakness? Adventure. The Smuggle Wore Silk has that in spades, too. The love story was gripping, and I didn't figure out who'd done it til the end, so I say kudos. If anything, I could've used a little more.

I'm looking at you, Alexander. I wouldn't be opposed to an epilogue one day...
I am also a bit leery of new authors and this author was new to me. I am happy to say I really enjoyed this book.

I like Ms Alexander's writing style. I liked the romance, the action, the drama and the emotion she was able to convey in the story.

Julian and Grace are both scarred a a wounded by life. They need each other and yet resist committing. They are both a bit stupid in that respect. Each willing to sacrifice happiness to "spare" the other. I could sort of understand it in Julian's case - but why Grace did it was not clear to me.

There were three reasons why I didn't give this five stars. One - Julian never says I love you - that is a must for me. I believe he loved her and when he compared himself to the villain he admitted he also loved a woman (not the same thing - sorry) ,Two - a couple of story lines were left dangling (like who visited
Michael and what was that about?) and Three - the book just ends too abruptly and the reader is left wondering what is going to happen with these two - an epilogue was really needed.

Other than those things - which in the grand scheme of things were really minor. This was a very good book and I look forward to reading Angel's book.
