The Little Shop of Found Things A Novel Paula Brackston 9781250072436 Books

I've enjoyed many of Paula Brackston's books and this one didn't disappoint. Everything from the setting (England) to the magic of antiques and the promise of old stories they can tell, throw in a bit of romance, and it is a book that I can't put down. I enjoyed the descriptions of the manor, of the people in both time periods, and most of all Xanthe's unique personality. Knowing that this is the beginning of a new series is wonderful, but at the same time annoying because I have to wait for the next book to come out. Only 4 stars because I wish the ending would have been a bit different, and I won't go into detail here because I don't want to spoil it for other readers, but even a sneak peak into the next book would have gone a long way.

The Little Shop of Found Things A Novel Paula Brackston 9781250072436 Books Reviews

The Little Shop of Found Things was a nice read. I thoroughly enjoyed the story line and the characters. It was a bit slow in some areas but there were many areas of high anticipation that kept me hooked through the whole novel. Paula Brackston has done a fine job of intertwining the present and the past. I loved getting to know Xanthe, Flora, and Samuel. Most of all I look forward to finding out what happens next with these characters in Brackston's latest book series. I gave The Little Shop of Found Things 4 Stars.

With the weather getting colder outside, The Little Shop of Found Things was the perfect book to read snuggled next to a cozy fire, some coffee spiked with Irish Cream and a warm blanket. It made for a nice an relaxing weekend. I would recommend this book to my friends.
I felt the author handled time travel in the most believable way! Loved her descriptions of the feasts in the Great Hall. My only wish was that Zanthe would not have had to lie about going to help a friend eith a breakup. Flora knew items “sang” to Zanthe and that she spent quite a bit of money on the chatelaine. Zanthe could have told her mom she needed to help someone in connection with it. As it stands now in the story, Flora simply sees Zanthe able to part with it only a short while after having it and doing nothing with it. Flora us too smart a character to indult her in that way. More could have been done her besides keeping Flora in the dark. I hope there is a sequel bc overall I really enjoyed it!!
I didn't know this book was a series when I read it. The good news is that it's a great book and I'm glad there will be more. The bad news is I read it when it first came out, so now I'm stuck waiting at least six months to a year for the next one. The story was engaging and the characters impossible not to love. My only complaint was the author's decision to make the ghost scary and mean, which in turn made Xanthe frightened and desperate. I'd have loved to have seen her to stand up to the ghost, or at least outsmart her. It's hard to have fun sharing the adventure with someone who's constantly worried about her mother.
There were times during the reading of this story that I became exasperated with Xanthe. She pulled some bone-headed moves worthy of a damsel-in-distress or bubble-headed blonde (no offense to the blondes out there). I kept thinking I wasn't going to make it through...but the story was intriguing. I actually finished it sitting in the doctor's office and groaned loudly at the end. So loudly, the nurse came in to see if I was OK! I actually TRULY enjoyed it, My only true criticism is how it ended. I thought there had better be more to this. What happened to Samuel; why was she overlooking Liam; why didn't give Mistress Merton a splash of holy water or bunch in her nose. Frustrating. Luckily, now that I am reviewing my earlier purchase I see there is a forthcoming follow-up book - BUT BUT BUT I have to wait until October 2019. I do believe that to be as cruel as separating Xanthe and Samuel!!!
It's trite and slow and the characters are unoriginal. Lots of missed opportunities to make this a decent story. Seems very forced.
I just plain loved it! What was it that I loved? It plunged me back to a prior era, 1605 to be exact, and I immersed myself in a very magical and romantic tale that took me away from today’s news and problems. The author has a great imagination and created very realistic characters. I did not want to put the book down. However, when I started reading it I thought I had read enough of time travel tales and the book seemed different from what I imagined it would be like. It took me awhile to rid myself of that feeling and then I enjoyed the descriptions of the antiques and before I knew it I was engrossed happily in the tale. Just totally an enjoyable escape into the past.
Xanthe and mother Flora leave London to open a antique shop in Marlborough. A very small town where visitors come to shop for artifact and antiques. Flora is not well, but leaving her husband and dealing with frozen bank accounts, she is looking forward to a new life. Xanthe has suffered from a drug addicted ex boyfriend that landed her in jail and made her unwilling to sing again.

Xanthe is gifted with psychometry, sometimes an antique sings to her, and she wants to find out my about the item. A chatelaine sung so loud, and it's energy took her to a strange small building in the back yard, which turns out to be a jail.

A ghost named Mistress Merton, wants Xanthe to travel back in time to save her daughter, a maid servent accused of theft. Once back in time Xanthe deals with legal problems and customs of that time. Great historical detail and crafted characters made the book interesting and I look forward to the rest of the series.
