Between working full-time and writing a thesis, I've had no time to read, but there's always traffic and a stolen 15 minutes of quiet here and there. I devoured this. This book answered questions I'd always had about feudal life in Japan, origins of traditions and roots of customs still commonly practiced today. Eloquent, and as detailed as needed, true to Japanese style. Thank you for the history lessons and for the trip back to my heart's home.

Lucia is an honest writer, and respects both her subject and her readers. I have had at least a dozen copies of this book, and have worn out three or four; the rest have gone to friends who have fallen in love with The Tokaido Road and so keep the loaned book as a gift. The characters are at once familiar and alien familiar humans in (to a 21st century American) an alien culture. While the need for revenge is understandable, Lucia helps the reader to understand why it is so important, and how terrible as well as how beautiful it can be. My only sorrow is that she hasn't revisited the novel's location. I'd love to read more.
When I find a jewel of a book like this one, I am often impressed at how easy it is to read and follow and my respect for the author becomes something akin to awe.
"Shogun" by James Clavell is a great book, but "The Tokaido Road" is much better and more fun, although not as long. It even ends pretty well with no burning demand for a sequel, although I would love to read a sequel. The story has a happy ending but the characters could easily get into more adventures. Will we see a sequel someday? I sure hope so...!
This was a beautifully written story, very descriptive, full of believable characters. I'm interested in Japanese culture and history, and this was an enjoyable gateway into the fascinating Edo period. Robson has clearly done her research.

I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a strong, realistic heroine, a redemptive journey, or just plain escaping to another place and time for a while.
Lucia St. Clair Robson wrote "Tokaido Road" in 1991. The level of research obviously done for this book is amazing. The details are almost overwhelming. I felt I was seriously in feudal Japan and on this great roadway from Kyoto to Edo.

"Cat" the main character is not a sweet, kimono-clad beauty, but a woman who pulses with real life. Since I have been researching and writing a novel called "The Kimono", set in 1650's Japan, but in the northern region of Akita, I have read and reread this book a number of times. It is so full of historical facts and detail it stands almost as a research piece.

This is a book to fall into. But be warned it's not a fast read. To do so is to lose the marvelous detail of personal life of Japanese people, commoners, artists, samurai and all else. Go slowly and really enjoy the scenery.

This is the best single fiction book I have read about feudal Japan. It really conveys a tremendous sense of the daily life and culture in a most enjoyable way. It is a highly imaginative "prequel" to the story of the 47 ronin (Chushingura). The heroine Cat is plucky, loyal, sensual, and skilled in the high arts of poetry, spirituality and the tea ceremony as well as the enjoyable lower arts of acting, disguise and kicking ass (with and without sword and stave). This book is great! I read the paperback edition several years ago, and have re-read it twice since. An easy and highly enjoyable entry into Japanese culture.
This book was very different from the typical book I read. However, I found it very enjoying. The author does a great time job telling the story. There are also many wonderful characters that group for throughout the whole book. I love the incorporation of Japanese culture.
