As a child, Stephen worked out his plans for the "inevitable" zombie apocalypse with his friend Jake. Now he is all grown up with a real job and real responsibilities. His spare time is now taken up online - surfing, blogging and facebooking. Then the mysterious sickness hits San Antonio and people start dying by the thousands. He stops by his neighborhood bar after a tragically brief day at the office. A little flirting with the hot bartender, then home alone to blog. As he begins to realize from the news and Internet traffic that the dead are rising, his childhood preparations come rushing to the forefront of his mind. And the number one rule was always, "Chivalry will get you killed!" His conviction to this rule is immediately tested when he gets a call for help from the bartender. Chivalry - and hormones - wins out as he sets out to rescue the object of his desires. Before the electric grid goes down, he receives an internet plea for help from his childhood friend Jake in Houston. He again decides that his duty is most important in this situation. He sets off on the 200 mile journey where the zombies may not be the worst he has to contend with. His preparation didn't include dealing with human monsters.

I was a bit uncertain about reading a zombie novel, but I enjoy M.A. Rogers' tweets so much I already knew he was a good writer. There's an art to tweeting, and M.A. has it. Even the humor in the title drew me in "Chivalry is Undead: Just Another Zombie Love Story." Had to smile at that one. So going in I knew I had three things books I love need: Clear writing, vivid humor, and heart. From the first chapter, written as a blog in the normal world of Stephen, our soon-to-be zombie killing hero, I was hooked. Stephen thinks it's weird that half of the people at work are out sick, he senses things are a little bit off, but he stops by his favorite bar after work anyway, where Jessica, the lovely bartender of his dreams, pours him bourbon as they trade stories of the days' strange feel. Neither of them yet know that they are living in a new world, one controlled by zombies, and their flirty banter reflects that.
Home on his computer, Steve quickly realizes that Texas, from San Antonio to Houston, has gone zombie. He finds Jessica and the two of them head out for Houston where Steve's buddy and his family are dealing with the same big city zombie situation. Steve's plan is to find a place out in the country where they can all be safe while waiting out the war. Things don't go exactly as planned, but the plot buzzes along at a nice clip and the shambling zombies prove no match for Steve's posse, loaded with SUVs, baseball bats and guns.
Well into the story, Rogers name checks "Night of the Living Dead" the only zombie movie I've ever seen. Loved that and loved quick-thinking Steve and Jessica. Their romance in no way keeps them from cracking serious zombie skull. The gore I thought would be my biggest obstacle proved to be plentiful and colorfully descriptive, but just another part of this intense story, the first in a series by a new novelist whose work shows promise of more and even better things to come.

Chivalry is Undead Just Another Zombie Love Story M A Rogers Cathy Miller Burgoyne 9781475283761 Books Reviews
One of the things I love about zombie novels is seeing how the characters learn to adapt and survive in an environment with an unknown menace. Chivalry is Undead depicted this well as the characters learned new survival skills. They studied the zombies carefully to determine their strengths and weaknesses. They figured out how to best protect themselves - duct tape! (Great idea, second only to a neoprene wetsuit featured in another zombie book I read recently.) Well, a great idea until a latter part of the book where parents were instructed to duct tape their children before themselves. No!! Anyone who has sat through a flight attendant's spiel about oxygen masks knows the cardinal rule - parents need to protect themselves first. But I digress...
It's difficult to find originality in this genre, and there is unfortunately not much new here. There were some aspects that grated. Characters frequently tell Stephen, the narrator, that he's a hero. He gets humble, acts embarrassed, and denies it. He repeatedly tells them he's not the leader. Maybe that's a leadership technique, but it became tiresome. I also did not love the love story between Stephen and Jessica that developed out of thin air. The unlikely couple falls in love quickly, which I guess may be possible (or even likely) during a zombie apocalypse. But the amount of "I love you's," "baby's," "honey's," and kissing would have been a lot for a romance novel, and it seemed extreme considering it was occurring during a zombie outbreak.
I enjoyed the non-dialogue writing, but some of the dialogue sections sounded awkward and melodramatic "I will be your Jessie from now until the end of our days." "I'm no hero. I will do whatever it takes to help those I love." And so on.
On a positive note, there was a good deal of tension and some exciting scenes. The characters stayed on the move, preventing the story from getting stale and boring.
Random note George Romero gets a shout-out, but did Robert Kirkman deserve one, too? The characters almost universally referred to the zombies as "zombies," except for a couple of occasions when the term "walkers" was used. I wasn't sure if this was an unconscious mistake on the author's part.
This book is a blast to read. In his Freshman offering, MA does a great job of developing characters that are thrown into a world that has been turned upside down. The author writes this from a "blogging" prospective but not so much that you feel like you are reading a blog. It is a fun story that I hammered through in 2 days on my kindle. Not sure how long it is in paper form as far as pages go, but I guarantee that once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down. As I was reading this, and the story is developing, I am watching as tells me I am 85% done, and I can't imagine MA can complete the story with such a few number of pages left. And he DOESN"T. Bastard! Luckily he is near completing the second book, so if you are planning on reading this one, or just finished, the good news is you won't have to wait long for the story to continue. Great job Mr. Rogers!
